How to Make your Career Expo Experience a Success!!
Before You Arrive:
- DRESS PROFESSIONALLY: Meeting with company representatives at the job
fair is a brief, but real interview. If you don’t impress them the first time,
you may not get a second chance. The night before lay out your clothes and have
everything neat, clean and pressed.
- REVIEW YOUR RESUME: Before the job fair, have your resume reviewed.
Make sure that it is error free and has an attractive look. This is your opportunity to
sell yourself, make sure your resume is a reflection of your experience. Bring several
professional–quality copies of your resume to hand out.
- DO YOUR HOMEWORK: Go into the Expo knowing which companies you want to talk to
and have questions ready. This is not just an opportunity for them to interview you;
you are interviewing them also.
- PRACTICE: Prepare what you are going to say. Begin by introducing yourself:
give your full name, career interest and major, experience or relevant skills. Smile,
make eye contact, shake hands firmly and confidently.
At the Career Expo:
- WEAR A NAMETAG: At almost all career fairs, you will be provided a nametag when you
register or check in at the event. If you are given a blank nametag, print your first and last
name and class year; if it is pre–printed, verify that the information is correct before
walking away from the registration table. You should place your nametag on your right side so employers
can see it while you are shaking their hand.
- GET THEIR BUSINESS CARD: Discuss how and when to follow–up. This is an
opportunity for you to remind the company why your qualifications make you the “perfect
candidate”.
- ENJOY YOURSELF: This is your opportunity to shine. Be prepared and it could get you
the job you’ve been looking for.
After the Expo:
- FOLLOW-UP: It’s a long day for the employers and they will see hundreds
of students. Follow–up and remind them why you have the qualifications that they are
looking for.
